Nigel Gawa: An unusual path to health care leadership

Executive Master of Health Administration (EMHA) student Nigel Gawa has had an unusual path to health care leadership. Gawa started working at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) in environmental services in 2015 and has been promoted three times into progressively higher supervisory positions. He completed a bachelor's degree in social work from the UI and expects to graduate with an Executive MHA degree in summer 2023. Recently, he was offered and accepted the administrative fellowship position at UIHC starting summer 2023. Gawa recently answered a few questions about his academic journey and professional aspirations.

Khyathi Gadag: Building better connections to mental health services

Khyathi Gadag V. is a PhD student in the University of Iowa College of Public Health with degrees in dental surgery and health care administration. She also has worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Health Management at Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences in India. She's interested in the connection between health policy and mental health and recently took the time to answer a few questions about her work on the UI campus to support student mental health initiatives, including starting a new student health mental health and wellness organization called Here to Help.

University of Iowa third-year student Jeff Leiberton was sitting in his 9:30 a.m. electricity and magnetism class when he received a message from the university's director of scholar development, Kelly Thornburg. "The email said I could officially state that I was a Goldwater Scholar. I was so excited that I couldn't focus on class. It became the longest lecture I have ever sat through."
