In her own words, Tj Grimes talks about her experiences while traveling to Seoul, South Korea, in the spring semester of 2022. "I was fully aware of the differences in ideology from that widely accepted in the United States. Although some do not support the LGBTQ+ community in the United States, the silver lining is that people in the community do have legal rights that they would otherwise not have if they were outside of the United States."

International Studies and Chinese major Marissa Schooley of Allerton, Iowa, has been awarded a 2022 U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) for an intensive Mandarin language program this summer.

In her own words, Sushma Santhana talks about her many experiences travelling abroad last summer. "Even four months after coming back from my study abroad experience, it's hard for me to collect all of my memories and experiences from my month there and put them into one piece of writing. So much happened in such little time, and while it does seem cliche, my confidence in my identity and my ability to empathize with those around me increased greatly from my time in Italy."

Seventeen University of Iowa students and alumni were chosen from about 10,000 Fulbright Award applicants nationwide to serve as representatives of the U.S. State Department to teach English abroad and to undertake public health research and creative writing projects in 16 countries during the 2022-23 academic year.

Megan Lough knew she would get a quality education at the University of Iowa College of Nursing. The school had popped up when she searched for the best nursing colleges. What she didn't expect was how her academic experiences abroad would unveil her true passions in health care. "I have a greater worldview because I went to the University of Iowa," says Lough, a native of Eagan, Minnesota. "I understand diversity more. I am able to see the value of an environment that continually cares about teaching and learning and researching and being innovative." By the time she graduated from Iowa with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2019, Lough had spent five months in Peru studying Spanish, five weeks in Colombia performing nursing research, and two weeks in Eswatini, a small country in southern Africa where she learned about community and public health nursing. These experiences, she says, helped her determine the kind of nurse she wants to be.

A team of eight undergraduate and graduate University of Iowa students studying in the College of Public Health led by instructor Jeff Dawson in March traveled to Xicotepec, a small city in central-eastern Mexico, as part of a weeklong, interdisciplinary service-learning course.
