14 University of Iowa students, alumni receive Fulbright awards to travel abroad in 2023-24

Fourteen University of Iowa students and alumni were chosen from about 10,000 Fulbright Award applicants nationwide to serve as representatives of the U.S. Department of State in 11 countries during the 2023-24 academic year. The students will teach English abroad, serve in local community organizations, enroll in graduate studies at cutting-edge universities, and conduct research.

Four Hawkeyes were recognized at the First-Generation Students Awards and Recognition Ceremony Nov. 11 as part of the weeklong National First-Generation College Celebration. The UI First-Generation Task Force established the awards to recognize first-gen student achievements as well as the outstanding advocacy and support efforts of faculty and staff.

Iowa Technology Institute graduate research assistant awarded Department of Defense fellowship

A University of Iowa PhD candidate working as a research assistant at the Iowa Technology Institute has been selected for the National Defense Science and Engineering (NDSEG) Fellowship Program. Bernice Kubicek was awarded the fellowship to continue work born out of her time with the Ananya Sen Gupta Research Group, which is directed by Sen Gupta, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering. Kubicek conducts research on sonar autonomous target recognition through the development of feature extraction algorithms that aim to improve the classification and recognition of objects deep underwater.

Guowei Qi has been named one of 17 Churchill scholars in the nation. Qi will graduate in May with degrees in biochemistry, computer science, and mathematics and is the fifth University of Iowa student to receive the fellowship.

Three University of Iowa undergraduates -- Daniel Fu, Arshaq Saleem, and Kartik Sivakumar -- have won the Iowa Neuroscience Institute's 2021 Summer Scholar Award. The INI Summer Scholar program supports Iowa undergraduates planning to pursue research during the summer in the lab of an INI faculty member.

Serena Gumusoglu: Doctoral student recognized with prestigious Montgomery Dissertation Prize

Doctoral student Serena (Banu) Gumusoglu recently received the prestigious Rex Montgomery Dissertation Prize, which recognizes the most meritorious dissertation by a University of Iowa doctoral student conducting research in prevention of disease and/or the translation of research into clinical practice. "It's nice to feel that the work is recognized at this level given the peers that I have," Gumusoglu says. "It's definitely representative of the program that nominated me-that I was able to perform at this level and do this work. The strength of the Neuroscience Program at the University of Iowa is what makes it such a destination program for people."

Marissa Mueller: Biomedical engineering student named University of Iowa's 22nd Rhodes Scholar

As an athlete on the Iowa women's track and field team, Marissa Mueller has worked hard at remaining calm under pressure. She used those skills Saturday as she interviewed for the most prestigious opportunity of her college career. Mueller, who will graduate in May with a degree in biomedical engineering, is from Petrolia, Ontario, Canada, and was named one of that country's 11 Rhodes Scholars. She is the 22nd UI student to receive the honor, and the second female.

Margaret Tish awarded the 2020 Kwak-Ferguson Fellowship

University of Iowa graduate student Margaret Tish has won the 2020 Kwak-Ferguson Fellowship, a $10,000 award from the Iowa Neuroscience Institute for an upper level graduate student working in the area of neurodegenerative diseases. Tish is a 4th year student in the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Neuroscience and conducts research in the lab of Joel Geerling, MD, PhD, assistant professor of neurology. Her research focuses on Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, a debilitating cause of dementia characterized by enlarged cerebral ventricles. Biology graduate student Briante Najev wins award for climate-oriented outreach activity

Briante Najev, a first-year graduate student in the University of Iowa's Department of Biology, won a European Society for Evolutionary Biology Outreach Fund grant to create outreach activities explaining climate issues. With the award, Najev will lead an activity, called EcoStax, with people across eastern Iowa, particularly Muscatine and Davenport. In this activity, which was created by the National Center for Science Education, participants build an ecosystem, then try to keep it stable under the duress of climate change, helping to make climate issues local and personal.

UI students honored with National Science Federation Graduation Research Felllowships

Two current graduate students, two incoming graduate students and three undergraduates have been awarded the prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship to support their graduate studies. The award provides the students with three years of financial support ($34,000 annual stipend and $12,000 cost-of-education allowance to the graduate institution) for graduate study that leads to a research-based master's or doctoral degree in chemistry, computer & information sciences, engineering, geosciences, life sciences, materials research, mathematical sciences, physics & astronomy, psychology, social sciences, and STEM education & learning research.

UI breaks record with 21 Fulbright award winners

A record 21 University of Iowa students and alumni from a range of creative, academic, and scientific fields have been chosen from among more than 10,000 students nationally to receive a prestigious Fulbright award to conduct research, teach English, or undertake creative projects abroad in 2020-21. For the past year, these Fulbright finalists have been encouraged by advisors, nominated by professors, and supported by those who have witnessed their academic dedication and service to the community to take a crucial step forward in applying to represent their country as citizen ambassadors. "Our 21 finalists and 11 alternates this year have undergone a rigorous selection process," says UI Fulbright faculty mentor Kathleen Newman. "We congratulate them and we wish them well as they begin their work abroad as researchers or English teaching assistants. This is a wonderful opportunity to make international connections and to learn to see the world from another culture's perspective."

Mahanna wins Library Research Award

Allexis Mahanna, a UI senior majoring in global health studies, won the inaugural Undergraduate Library Research Award (ULRA) offered by the University of Iowa Libraries. Mahanna was selected from a competitive pool of undergraduate researchers who applied for the award and presented their work at the University of Iowa's Fall Undergraduate Research Festival in November. Mahanna's research focuses on the differences in migration policies between the autonomous community of Catalonia and the local municipality of Barcelona, Spain. She evaluated the local migration policies of Barcelona through a case study framework analyzing country-wide policies and community perceptions of migrants.
