More than 40 current students at the University of Iowa are helping to shape the future of their alma mater by serving on one of 18 charter committees that advise institutional leadership on topics ranging from diversity and teaching to research and intercollegiate athletics. Anne Abbott is a PhD student in community and behavioral health at the University of Iowa College of Public Health. Her research is focused on health communication campaigns, adolescent and young adult health, and program evaluation. In the spring, Anne began a collaboration with local parks and recreation departments to produce materials that build awareness of social distancing etiquette while using outdoor public spaces during the COVID-19 pandemic

University of Iowa graduate and undergraduate students are helping develop the state's budding winemaking industry, connecting grape growers with winemakers throughout Iowa

Emma Thornburg, Parker Abbott, Amanda Bullert, Bess Glickman, Camille Hanes, and Tim Skog - all doctoral students in the Neuroscience Graduate Program - shared their love for science with students in grades 6-8 at Kids Go STEM in March at the Medical Education and Research Facility on the UI medical campus.

More than 1,200 girls from 42 counties across Iowa -- including Maya Baker of Bettendorf -- have participated in Girls Go STEM since the program began in 2012. Through this University of Iowa program, many participants are discovering new opportunities and interests.

About 200 University of Iowa College of Dentistry students, faculty, and alumni participated in the Iowa Mission of Mercy dental clinic in Davenport in September, providing free care to people without dental insurance. The event provides Iowa students with the sort of experience they can't always get in a collegiate clinic.
