Min Zhang: Mining consumer reviews for innovation gold
A soon-to-be published study co-authored by Min Zhang, graduate student in informatics, finds that companies can find ideas for innovative new products in the consumer review sections on e-commerce websites like Amazon. The review sections are essentially free focus groups where consumers can leave ideas for new or improved products, says Weiguo Fan, professor of business analytics in the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business and study co-author. Finding those nuggets of consumer wisdom can be a challenge, though. Few companies have the resources to sift through thousands of comments across dozens of e-commerce sites, only a small number of which offer any kind of information that could be used for product innovation.

3MT competition helps graduate students more effectively share their research
Moala Keshei Bannavti has firsthand experience with PCBs in schools. "I grew up in a town with a lot of underrepresented minorities, and we were all from low-income families," she says. She and her classmates went to an old school with air that likely had high levels of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs), an invisible but common compound that she didn't realize can cause an array of health problems until she became a graduate student at the Iowa College of Engineering. "They can cause cancer, disrupt hormones, they're just horrible, and they're found in the air everywhere," she says. To help schools identify and inexpensively remove materials that cause PCBs from their older buildings, Keshei Bannavti is developing a targeted materials-remediation plan as a civil and environmental engineering doctoral student. The research captured first place in the Graduate College's annual Three Minute Thesis competition earlier this month. The 3MT competition helps graduate students learn how to articulate their often complex and complicated research to non-experts clearly and concisely in three minutes or less. That isn't always easy for grad students, most of whom have been taught to go into great depth and speak with a certain language that a non-academic, and sometimes even an academic from another field, may not understand.

Student CAMBUS drivers answer volunteer call with unique requirement
UI Laundry Services identified the need for more trained drivers, but where would they find a pool of drivers with Class B commercial driver's licenses (CDL) that could be deployed quickly? The answer: Right here on the UI campus. CAMBUS and Fleet Services management asked their employees if they would volunteer to temporarily join UI Laundry Services as delivery drivers in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. With five employees volunteering for reassignment, Laundry Services can proactively prepare for any surge in demand related to COVID-19. "I am so impressed that these employees were willing to pitch in," says Brian McClatchey, CAMBUS assistant director.

24 Hawkeyes to Watch (Athletics Experiment)
There is an intellectual side to being a goalkeeper on a NCAA Division I women's soccer team. Senior Claire Graves has that type of analytical mind as well as the physical attributes that have made her a four-year starter for the University of Iowa soccer team. "I like to say goalkeeping is an intellectual position," said Graves, a Noblesville, Indiana, native who intends to pursue a career in medicince. "You have to think and read. You're only called upon every 10-15 minutes, if that. You have to be mentally engaged to what might happen. My ability to think analytically is what gives me an edge, but sometimes it can bite me if I overthink, but most of the time, I have the ability to think ahead, and that helps."

Creating a culture of access to care
Megan Lough knew she would get a quality education at the University of Iowa College of Nursing. The school had popped up when she searched for the best nursing colleges. What she didn't expect was how her academic experiences abroad would unveil her true passions in health care. "I have a greater worldview because I went to the University of Iowa," says Lough, a native of Eagan, Minnesota. "I understand diversity more. I am able to see the value of an environment that continually cares about teaching and learning and researching and being innovative." By the time she graduated from Iowa with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2019, Lough had spent five months in Peru studying Spanish, five weeks in Colombia performing nursing research, and two weeks in Eswatini, a small country in southern Africa where she learned about community and public health nursing. These experiences, she says, helped her determine the kind of nurse she wants to be.

UI students assist RAGBRAI towns in preparation for the spotlight
When 10,000-ish RAGBRAI riders hit tiny Libertyville, Iowa, on July 25, those who are good at math knew how much the burg's population of 324 would multiply. And with the help of two University of Iowa students, residents were ready for them. Seniors Ryan Light and Ryan Raaf worked with the town's organizing committee, planning and putting together events that encouraged riders to stop for a few minutes during their cross-state ride.
