Marcus Smith participates in alternative spring break trip

Marcus Smith, a native of Bolingbrook, Illinois, was one of nearly 130 students from the University of Iowa who participated in an Alternative Spring Break trip from March 14-21. Nine Hawkeye Service Teams headed out across the country on trips promoting service learning, social justice, and community building. They had an opportunity to serve with the community of St. Louis, Mo., as part of the trip “Learn today. Lead Tomorrow: Exploring Educational Equity” sponsored by the UI Center for Diversity & Enrichment & TRiO Student Support Services programs. The Alternative Spring Break Program is supported and coordinated by the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership (CSIL). The UI is one of only a few alternative break programs in the country to also require students to participate in a common academic course as part of the experience.
