Council on Undergraduate Research selects UI student's project for Posters on the Hill

University of Iowa undergraduate Caroline Wadman, a psychology major from Omaha, Nebraska, and her faculty mentor, Gerene Denning, research director in the Department of Emergency Medicine, will participate in the 20th annual Posters on the Hill event, a selective poster session sponsored by the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR), April 19-20 in Washington, D.C.

Sixty projects were selected from several hundred highly competitive applications from undergraduate students who attend colleges and universities across the nation.

Wadman's winning submission is titled "A Dangerous Toy: All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV)-Related Deaths and Injuries." Her study of ATV crashes in Iowa showed that children are at particular risk of injury, as are ATV users riding on the road. The study results will be used to create materials for educational and public-awareness purposes to reduce ATV-related deaths and injuries and to develop evidence-based ATV safety laws.

The event allows this select group of students the opportunity to share their undergraduate research with members of Congress, congressional staff, federal government officials, academics, and other researchers. Posters on the Hill enables lawmakers to see how federal programs and dollars impact students and faculty and helps communicate to them the value of undergraduate research.
